Honestly, my absolute favorite pizza in the world. (And I'm from old forge.......) sausage/pepperoni square is my go-to. I cannot eat less than 6 cuts of this in one sitting

After reading such a wonderful, and well-written poetic review from Fox E., my boyfriend decided to get some late night pizza at Maroni's. Should note that we were visiting from Baltimore (we don't have good pizza in Baltimore, so don't start judging me here.. bf is from New York though) and didn't have many choices at this hour (9:30 pm Saturday night). We came in and noted that yes, this place did look rather dumpy, but know that those are often the best places, and yes the prices were cheap.
Few Things Before I review:
1) The $1 slices that we were so excited about were not available at 9:30 (the place was empty so I get it); however there was a random stack of slices sitting behind the counter on display. It seemed unsanitary and real weird.
2) Restaurant itself was very dated, and bathrooms were dirty.
3) They only take cash. Pfft.
4) Staff was VERY friendly. Let us do half and half pizza without an extra charge and didn't charge full price for all the toppings.
5)Small round pizza half and half was $10.65. Prices are reasonable here.
Now the pizza. It looked sloppy when I opened the box. Scalding hot, good. but the cheese was sort of "gloopy." We only realized afterwards after thinking "huh.. weird taste. Kind of tastes like mayonnaise+cheese" that it was because of the american cheese blend. Which in my opinion, has its place on burgers at a cookout, but not many other places.. definitely not pizza. Super greasy. The crust was actually okay and held up the crazy toppings. They did give a FULLY topped pizza. But the anchovies looked like enormous sardines.. bad quality. Overpowered the pizza. Mushrooms were canned. Suspected frozen or canned green peppers. Nothing tasted very fresh. I honestly liked it better cold because it was easier to eat and nothing was falling off the pizza in a waterfall of american cheese.
Think this is definitely a home-town favorite place and maybe an acquired taste. Wanted to like it, but I finished eating Kraft singles when I was 8. -

Only Moronis don't love Maroni's. A special place for me because I took the love of my life here 10 years ago when on tour in Eastern PA, and she loved it, and befriended the owner. 10 years later, I took her back here, and she remembered it, and loved the pizza just as much, even though he didn't remember her.
What to get: Slices of pizza for a dollar! And they're so so so so good.
What not to get: Put off by how ancient Scranton, or this place, is.
Named after the band Maroni 5, their lead singer invented this pizza before he became famous singing about Payphones, Jagger, and shooting his girl and her secret lover because, well, he "had to." Half of his tattoos are actually of this pizza. You learn something new every day.
One of the most unique and delicious pizzerias in the whole nation. You can't get much better than this place. Absolutely delicious cheap squares of Scranton style (aka Old Forge style) savoury salty tomato-heavy rich Pizza which will give you a pizzagasm if you like real homemade style All American Pizza (made with American cheese rather than Mozz, giving it a very unique taste that is peculiar and native to this region). Nobody else makes it as good as Maroni. If you don't give them 5 stars, I can't with you.
They've been here for a long long time (kinda like your mother at my place) and you can see why. The owner is a really good guy, even though employees sometimes don't get along with each other.
Definitely an old-time classic, with emphasis on old, much like most of Scranton, really. They're still selling slices for under a dollar - which is insane considering how good they taste. Yes they are small, but come on, so is your boyfriend.
When you see how busy and popular they are, there's no doubt that Maroni is the pizza favourite of the region, and it's a crime and an absolute travesty that there are not more reviews for this little Scranton gem on the back streets of this timelessly old haunted northeastern Pennsylvania city.
If you only eat one thing in the region, it should be Maroni's Pizza. If you get the second thing from Coney Island of Scranton but this is by far the winner for this District.
And by the way, if you give this delicious legend, by far the best version of this local specialty, competing against all the chains and trendy suburban places and lasting the test of time, less than a 4 star rating? You're Yelping it wrong.
Foolish Yelpers often dismiss this COLDLY
With words that are dumb and stares so STONY
But there's no way to try this pizza REMOTELY
So get yourself over and try MARONI
If you're really hungry and feeling LONELY
If your wife or hubby is just your TROPHY
If your local slices taste too HOMELY
Come right down and try MARONI
Forget the local burgers, but do try a CONEY
They speed over here like Axel FOLEY
Let that pizza in like you're a bad GOALIE
Because no other slice is better than MARONI
So listen up, and listen CLOSELY
I'm the best Pizza expert on here, MOSTLY
Go where no Yelper has gone before, BOLDLY
Come and try the slices from MARONI

In an area full of pizza, Maroni's has always stood out from the other places in NEPA. First, the cheese/sauce combination they use on the round pizza is my favorite because it is smooth, creamy, and tangy, especially with italian sausage and pepperoni. It isn't an 'authentic' Italian pizza, rather it reminds me of pizza that I would make with my family. I have tried the square pizza and other toppings, but in the 100+ times I've been to Maroni's over the last 10+ years, I always get a plain round and one pepperoni + italian sausage round. The prices are very reasonable and parking usually isn't an issue unless it is a Friday during Lent (most pizza places in NEPA are crazy on a Friday during Lent).
